The City of Cambridge Economic Development Division provides guidance and leadership to continue Cambridge's successes now and in the future. Under the 2019/2020 City of Cambridge Business Plan, the Economic Development Division collaborates with departments across the corporation and provides necessary leadership to create a City that welcomes business, innovation, growth and development.

What we do

Our Economic Development staff participates in a number of activities to improve the City's economy, including:

  • Encouraging new investment in Cambridge
  • Developing and compiling targeted, strategic economic development data and information to support business decision making
  • Assisting potential investors with site selection research, including detailed statistical and market information on the City's business environment
  • Publishing an inventory of available privately owned for sale, as well as industrial and commercial buildings for sale or lease
  • Acting as a community salesperson and goodwill ambassador by participating in trade shows, investment seminars, special events and hosting visiting delegations
  • Acting as the principal liaison between City Council and the business community
  • Facilitating dealings with various City departments
  • Supporting existing businesses with their expansion needs
  • Having regular contact with the business community through networking and the business retention program
  • Identifying needs and challenges to help improve the overall business climate
  • Bringing companies together to promote and support local procurement, joint ventures, technology transfer opportunities and strategic partnerships
  • Sourcing products and services from local companies 
  • Encouraging and participating in partnerships, business networks and industry cluster development
  • Providing information on government programs and services available to business, such as trade missions and export opportunities
  • Assisting small business and new entrepreneurs to establish in Cambridge
  • Acting as a counselor, referral agent and facilitator to meet the needs of new and emerging small business enterprises
  • Providing information, consulting assistance, seminars and resource material through the Waterloo Region Small Business Centre (WRSBC )
Our responsibilities

The Cambridge Economic Development Division's responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the Waterloo Region Economic Development Corporation (Waterloo EDC), the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and other key community partners
  • Participating in land sale activity for local expansion of existing business and new investment growth
  • Involvement in servicing of industrial land and subdivisions in the L.G. Lovell and Cambridge Business Parks
  • Assisting and supporting small business and existing business through promotion, marketing and awareness
  • Marketing, promoting and assisting the Core Areas with retail and office development, and enhancement of the commercial base
  • Organizing and participating in special projects, aimed at recognizing business, increasing awareness of film and television opportunities and building on the strengths of the community
Advisory committees
Staffs from the City's Economic Development Division also participate in a number of advisory committees, including the Core Areas Revitalization Advisory Committee and Economic Development Advisory Committee.
