The St. Lawrence Seaway is one of the most important domestic and international transportation systems in the world, affecting an area containing nearly a third of the combined populations of Canada and the United States. Along its course, ships of the worlds trading nations, carrying their cargoes of up to 28,000 tons to and from the heartland of North America, are raised and lowered some 183 M (600 feet) by a series of locks.
